Really, I think this could be the greatest thing ever. Getting Alissa (spelled with an “i” just realized that now...) a 2016 Ford Raptor for a week, forcing her to use it every single day, documenting the whole thing and filming her everyday. A full blown comedy flick could be made out of this :)

PS: Alissa Walker... Is it her real name?? It’s so fitting, it has to be a pseudonym...

She knows how to drive a car. But writing articles like “cars are fine I guess” isn’t exactly going to bring in the clicks. Garker needs ____ is stupid/evil/problematic posts to keep that money rolling in.

My point would be that this combo of Ford Raptor/Manhattan/Dailydrive is litteraly everything she hates. I’m sure she can drive very well, no problem with that, but making her go through something like this and documenting it, could generate quite a few laughs :)

lol, well yeah... Having Patrick tell her that her job for the week is to daily drive it, is forcing her to drive it :)

Pretty sure she’d never do it on her own...

Kinja'd!!! Xyl0c41n3 > Flavien Vidal
06/28/2016 at 01:02

Kinja'd!!!1

Except doing something for your job doesn’t necessarily mean you are being “forced” to do it. And if her personal ethical objections to driving it are strong enough, it would be unethical for Patrick to “force” her to do it.

I’m a journalist and there are things I have refused to do because of my own ethical concerns or out of respect for someone else and their concerns (not getting too close to a funeral that was nationally relevant at the time comes to mind).

Alissa has written extensively about her stance on cars and public transportation, but as she revealed in the AMA she hosted on Oppo, she’s also one helluva Jalop. As such, she probably wouldn’t be completely opposed to your suggestion that she spend a week with a Raptor. We don’t know that that kind of idea hasn’t already been floated at a Jalopnik/Gizmodo budget meeting, but to insist that she be “forced” to do it, especially if you think “she’d never do it on her own” is more than a little fucking rapey.

How’s about you respect her autonomy and her right to evaluate (potential) assignments herself?

Ok.... I think you’re really reading way too much into things. Relax a little. No one is being “rapey” for jokingly offering to have her stucked with 2016 Raptor in Manhattan for a week.

06/28/2016 at 01:06

Nah bruh, I’m not going to “relax.” So many of your posts that in any way involve women are sexist as hell. It's gross. Not going to “relax” about that.

Kinja'd!!!6

Really WTF is wrong with you?? What posts are sexist as hell?? I’m forced by other people to do stuff every single day, and as long as it involves driving shitty cars I can’t stand, I don’t consider it to be “rapey”.

Waiting for my tons of sexist posts. Really WTF...

06/28/2016 at 01:16

Kinja'd!!!0

Actually, you’re right. You’re not the person whose posts I was thinking of. For that, I sincerely apologize.

I still stand by my earlier comments about suggesting Alissa be forced to do something against her will and her ethics.

Kinja'd!!! Flavien Vidal > Xyl0c41n3
06/28/2016 at 01:25

Kinja'd!!!2

Man, forcing ANYONE to do something is not cool. But there is “forcing” and “forcing”. I’m forced by my wife to cook a freaking long meal at least once a week because “I’m french” and cooking for 4 hours is supposedly not a big deal for me. I hate that, but I know she loves it, so I do it.

I’m forced to drive a freaking awful Suzuki Alto with the worst automatic gearbox on earth every day because my wife hates my daily driver.

I’m forced to change the gearbox of a Citroen DS that broke down because I won’t be able to sell it otherwise

I force my wife to clean up our room because she is freaking messy and her clothes are litteraly everywhere.

I force my best friend to take the plane to come see me in Japan, eventhough he hates flying

And so on, and so on, and so on.

So yes, really, stop reading into things this much, learn something called “nuance” and relax “bruh”.

Kinja'd!!! Xyl0c41n3 > Flavien Vidal
06/28/2016 at 01:32

Kinja'd!!!1

Except none of those things are being “forced” upon you, no one is “forcing” you to do it against your will, nor do you, your wife, or (presumably) your friend have ethical objections to doing any of them.

There’s no such thing as “forcing” and “forcing” like you suggest. Acts of love and/or obligation are not comparable to actions imposed on others against their will.

Also, I'm not a bruh, bro.

Kinja'd!!! Flavien Vidal > Xyl0c41n3

Kinja'd!!!5

Then don’t call me “bruh” in the first place. I’m not the one accusing random people of being “rapey” and “sexist” over the use of one freaking word in a post aimed at making someone drive a car.

On the other hand, if you can’t realize that wrongly accusing someone of being “rapey” and “sexist” is potentially extremely destructive and damaging to that person (especially to someone who post under his own name like me), YOU are the one who needs to learn the power and meaning of the words YOU use.

Again, learn about nuance, or maybe just go out and realize that when people use this word, it does not mean they are being “raped” or have a gun on their head.

I think that with you, for the first time, I discover what these “social justice warriors” so many people talk about, actually are.

You know, sometimes, it really is the little things. You mistook this guy for some other asshole, apologized for it, and then you got this last bit in?

To a certain extent, I don’t mind people who are jumping in and attacking in conversation that they had no part of getting a little snark right back (although, it’s always preferable to avoid shitstorms). But Flavien was being reasonable here.

I’ll take care of the others, but seriously, go a little easy on the guy who - by your own acknowledgement - was not the asshole you were thinking of.

If you saw a gigantic pile of shit in your front door, would you jump right into it, swim around in it, and then shit in it yourself? If the answer is “no,” then why jump into an argument you see online that didn’t involve you in the first place and stir more shit?

I have to, because I’m a mod. You not only don’t have to, you also shouldn’t.

If an argument doesn’t involve you, and you have nothing useful or positive to contribute, then leave it be.

While I agree with the sentiment that forcing anyone to do something they object to is wrong (I hesitate to use the word “rape” as that implies sexual connotations that I wish not to explore right now), I do think that the word as it is used in this context wasn’t trying to imply the use of force to coerce Walker to do something she didn’t want to.

I don’t know her, and have no idea what her thought process is or how Jalopnik’s staff meetings go, but I feel like it would come down to “hey do you want to drive this ridiculously large truck for an article? The joke is that it goes against your “don’t have a car but write for Jalopnik” shtick (?? is that the right word?). I doubt she’d be thrilled, and I’d be personally terrified to drive something like an F-450 or Hummer around New York, but it is her job and I’m sure anyone with a sense of humor would see the irony in the situation and go along with it. It is, after all, a paycheck.

Substitute “suggest” or “request” for “force” in this context and I believe it goes far more in line with what the OP was intending.

Cheers.

Oddly, you are just as guilty of shit stirring any time someone posts something that gets under your skin as the individual you are making not-so-veiled accusations at.

It was, after all, you that posted the words, “Oh fuck off,” was it not? Don’t you have anything better to do than try to make something out of nothing?

And trust me, unless you are personally involved in having to deal with it, the random arguments of a bunch of other random clowns on the internet really isn’t a big deal. I have to get in the middle and deal with this shit because I’m a moderator. You, on the other hand, have no such responsibility or requirement placed on you.

So why bother getting in the middle of shit that has nothing to do with yourself and stress yourself out over shit that is someone else’s business?

At the end of the day, dude, you are responsible for no one other than you. What we do or do not do with regards to moderating the actions of others is not your business. That’s between the moderators and the given individual in question. Just as someone like Xyl0 is in no way privy to the interactions between you and the moderators (beyond what can be seen in the original thread here), you are similarly not privy to interactions between others and the mod staff.

You do you, handle your own stuff, make sure you’re respecting the rules, and say “fuck it” to the rest.
